Subject: S/P 30 Days of the Dead
If this show ended at Dew, that probably would have been enough, but to continue on to a Sugar Mag>NFA>GDTRFB>NFA is just over the top.
The sound quality could not be better with Bobby right where he should be in the mix.
I loved the band in all of their eras and the different sounds and meaning they presented, but hearing this show confirms why my personal ride that started in the late 60's continues to this day.
Thank you Charlie Miller whoever you are and wherever you are. I'd be embarrassed to admit how much time I have spent listening to your recordings/uploads.
This helps to make the darkness of these political times give.

End of first run of the year, testing the mic cancellation system and the new cabinets that would soon be stacked into the Wall of Sound (the wall stacks were first erected a month later at the Cow Palace. The complete Wall of Sound touring rig, with the center speakers and all of the McIntosh amps, premiered in Reno in May). I recall having some of this as filler on a hot source that used to circulate (where did the AUDS go?). It's a better show than the next (the Cow Palace) overall and a consistent run. The 2nd set is 2hr:15min.
First Set. This is the second U.S. Blues (post-rewrite) - there were mix/board/PA problems every night of this run and it takes several songs to sort. Donna comes out on Beat it on Down the Line-5, which is better than previous nights. Candyman is where things first gel (Bobby tried for a Big River), though it's out of tune. They had only played 4 in '73 before this. The Jack Straw is good but these would be awesome in the fall. The peak is the very weavy China>Rider. Hoo hoo; game on! After that it's hot through a great Playin' - though beware Donnaskreech™ .
Second Set. It Must Have Been the Roses is the 2nd one (sounds like Bobby wanted Big Railroad - which was on the shelf at the time). Still a work in progress - also out of tune. All but a few of the rest are above average. Billy's fantastic on the shuffle in Big River but the magic happens in the end solo. The Weather Report Suite is one of the draws of '74. Always welcome, it has great moments and Keith on Hammond, though there are better examples from '74. Row Jimmy is down-tempo for '74 and is followed by another slow one. Promised Land wins, followed by a long Dark Star. It's one of just 6 in '74 and has some cool sections, but nothing landmark (19min in to the lyrics!), just a good 'ol Dark Star. Morning Dew takes off at the very end of the jam. Sugar Mag is far from a great '74 and codas with Bobby clearing his throat and Donna trying to make up for it more audibly. Restoring, Not Fade is just about perfect, into a likewise Goin' Down the Road. In the NFA reprise, Bobby starts losing his voice. Month off to heal vox. There was only one Baby Blue in '74 and it's the 1st since Sep72.
1st Set: B-
2nd Set: B-
Overall = 3½ stars
Highlights:
China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider - one of 74's best; up there with 8/5, 9/10, 10/17 & 10/20
Playing in the Band - great jam; very jazz
Not Fade Away>Goin' Down the Road Feelin' Bad - 2nd best sequence of the show
SOURCES: The miller.116902 is the upgrade; and Dave's 13. There are AUDs in circ. There's a 22sec cut in Row Jimmy on most SBDs, which have an inaudible splice cutting the whole first solo and a verse (2:32>4:32) . The Gans>Miller 116902 source plays it out, missing only 3:22>3:46; Dave's 13 patches with a smoothed and beefed AUD source.

Black Elk Speaks - right above the lightning skull, note "stream only" for this copy of this source. Just fyi in case - Today there are many options for streaming from a pro sound card and/or hi-fidelity adapter (or USB audio interface) to your stereo or to quality [maybe wireless] headphones, etc. You are not limited to laptop and {the gods forbid} shite earbuds.

If you look at the lineage and that it is a Charlie Miller, you would expect it to be really nice. It is freaking excellent. Thank you Charlie -- this is a true gem.
And what a killer show: It is one of those magic nights when everything just works. A direct hit on my pleasure center anyway.
I'm a huge China-->Rider fan and particularly fond of the 73-74 versions. This one may well be the best of them all. I like it better than Providence 6/26/74 by a pretty good amount and it joins and may even nudge out my other favorite versions, which include 6/22/73, 5/17/74, and 9/4/80.
If you don't like this show, well, may I suggest trying to enjoy the visual arts because you are missing the music piece in your brain.
This is one of those ever so nice 5 stars on performance and 5 stars on recording: Both are extraordinary. This one does it all. Make sure that if your ship ever sinks that you put this show in your life vest to listen to while you wait on that desert island to be rescued. You might wind up hiding from the rescuers.

That's what the lady at Ticketron in Sears smugly asked me when I purchased tix for all three nights back in December. I tried to explain it was because they didn't do their New Years eve show because of the gas shortage crisis we were all enduring. The speed limit had been reduced to 55 and everyone was complaining on on edge -- we had not experienced anything so austere. It was the beginning of the end for all of us if you know what I mean. Nothing before had so thoroughly shaken our collective souls like the gas crisis. The attraction was that I needed a heavy dosing of Grateful Dead, so I went all three nights.
This was not a particularly outstanding performance. Nothing about it completely left me speechless. In fact, this night seemed rather slovenly in execution except every song seems to rebound from initial strains of weakness into an almost rage-out.
The only question for me on this brisk stroll back to my car was how well my body and brain was going to respond to the lack of sleep I had prepared my weary body for the next day at work and lemme tell ya, when you get home at around 3 am and get up to that alarm clock screaming at 6 you know you are done in for it. May as well just shrug it off and get into it the best you could.
Oh, why did I go to a show in San Francisco on a Sunday night knowing I would be trashed the next day at the job? Foolish, foolish misspent youth. I survived.
Now, looking back, and listening to the glistening sound of this concert once again, I am glad I did it. I would have never had another chance.
Since then we had been subject to a lot of crises and they seem to be getting more and more frequent -- to the point where we've adapted and become rather immune.
But back in early 74 we caught the first glimpses of what was to become commonplace -- the ending of our sweet life.
You can never have those good times back -- those free and footloose times of being 25 years old in a wide open city and digging on the tunes of the Grateful Dead. It'll never be the same.
Glad I went.

A perfect intro to a near perfect show on the tail end of a phenomenal run. This show is a a perfect example of what I call heavy smoothness. Throughout the show, no matter the tune, they seem to maintain an effortless high that just lasts and lasts. Nothing seems forced and everything is played with conviction and poise which translates ever so nicely from the tape to the space in between my ears. This shows represents everything I love about the band, all wrapped up in a nice little three and a half hour package. All my favorite elements represented nicely with a wonderful, almost heartfelt vibe from the band.
The first set start with Bill Graham’s wonderful intro followed by an excellent US Blues opener that really sets the tone for the entire evening. The next five tunes, Mexicali through Jack Straw are all very good in their own right. I think the Jack Straw stands out the most as it is almost just exactly perfect. Jerry and Bobby just sound great, and Jerry’s soloing is laid back but ever present throughout the entire tune. So easy on the ears and wound up really nicely. Incredible Jack if there ever was one. Next on my list of standouts is the China>Rider. I mean, how good is this? Jerry’s work almost sounds a little twangy during China, very cool and unique. Each go round they come back slower and end even faster, very cool indeed. Not your average freight train transition here, more of a tricky-heavy-smoothie transition right here. Kinda like you have been listening and grooving to it for a few minutes before you really realize they already moved it right into Rider. Really great little jam tucked into the transition. Sweet! Ok, so the last of the heavies for the first set is the obvious, Playin’ .This one is very reminiscent of others from the period with a few subtle differences. They keep the pace up a little on this one, and never really slow it down too too much. Its very jazzy and at times Jerry was reminding me of Wes Montgomery the way he was throwing around those muted chords here and there. Make no mistake, it still had all the freakiness and then some, but I thought it was livelier and jazzier than others I have heard from the period. First set is done and I am happy. What a great listen so far and really easy on the ears.
The second set starts off beautifully with a Cumberland for the ages. This one is smooth and heavy, with Phil showing the way as he should on this tune. Jerry’s soloing is quick but not fast, and every note seems to be right where he wants it to be. Love this tune and this version. Great way to open the second set. Roses, Big River and Bertha were all well done, with Big River being the best of the three. They always did this tune with a real sense of purpose during this era, and this version is no exception. Roses was no slouch either, as I believe this was only the second or third time they played it live. Next up is WRS>LIG>Row Jimmy and I thought they were pretty standard and nothing too out of the ordinary. SOF and Promised Land followed and again, good but not great. Bobby was really getting down during Promised Land however. Now, on to Dark Star>Dew which is one of the obvious highlights of the show. It takes the boys about twenty minutes to even get the first verse out, and well worth the wait. This DS is pretty damn spooky, and after said first verse it is truly face melting time. I thought I heard Spanish Jam firing up around the 25 minute mark, but then again I could be wrong. This is one for the ages that goes right into an all timer Dew. Fuckin Dew-riffic right here. As good if not better than my personal fav of 6/18/74. Just incredible stuff being laid down right here. Emotional and sharp, and as heavy as could be. Watch out for this one, it may just knock you on your ass if you are not careful. Its that good. Smags is well done and the closing combo of NFA>GDTRFB>NFA is wonderful. They really bring the house down with the encore though, Baby Blue. Delicate and emotional, heavy and smooth. Just the way it should be. Bring the house lights up and that is that. Imagine for a moment what it would have been like to see a show during this time of this caliber. Incredible, just incredible. I give this show an A+ with my very highest recommendation. I think its only a matter of time before this run is chosen for the box set treatment. An all time performance was given on this evening my friends, make no mistake about it.
